Gayle knew she shouldn’t be surprised. She didn’t know why she had expectations anymore when it came to Greg. But some sliver of her always kept up hope…hope that he would love her again one day. She’d given him twelve good years and two sweet daughters. Greg doted on Melissa and Joanie. She only wished he’d do the same to her.
The girls were down for their nap, so Gayle decided to tend to her garden out front. Gardening always calmed her nerves. As she was trimming the bushes, she noticed Jim Morgan pull into his driveway across the street. He rushed into his house. Gayle felt envious. Jim and Carolyn were newlyweds. They were always holding hands and hugging anytime she glimpsed them in their front yard. She imagined Jim coming home for lunch to dote on Carolyn. Gayle shook her head to stop where her thoughts were headed.
Jim ran into the house, scared for what he suspected he’d find. He yelled out, “Carolyn!” He heard movement upstairs and quickly ran up. As he swung their bedroom door open he saw his wife helping her lover, his business partner John, out the window. John escaped and Carolyn ran crying into the bathroom and locked the door. They screamed at each other through the door, and Jim kicked it a few times.
Some time had passed and Gayle was cleaning up her front yard. She saw Jim rush out his door holding a suitcase. Carolyn followed, yelling and crying. Jim ignored her and got in his car. Gayle realized she’d been staring and quickly looked away.
Jim screeched out of the driveway, unable to look his cheating wife in the eye. As he put the car into drive he saw Gayle Johnson in her front yard. He pulled over, jumped out, and abruptly turned her to face him. He didn’t give her time to think before he kissed her.
Gayle was so shocked that at first she just stood there. But soon Jim opened something up inside her that had been shut down for far too long. She wrapped her arms around his neck and they fell into a deep and passionate kiss. He pulled away, gave her a wink, and then was in his car driving away. Carolyn was in the street out of breath and staring with her mouth wide open. Gayle didn’t know what to do. She quickly turned and ran into the house smiling at the fact that Greg was sitting in his car behind where Carolyn stood. She knew he’d seen the kiss. Gayle shut the front door, leaned against it, put her fingers to her lips, and grinned.
“Mommy!” The girls were up from their nap.
She started up the stairs. “Coming girls.”
