“Elegance is refusal.” ~ Coco Chanel
As the Glam Pack, we are striving to live a life devoid of mediocrity. And that isn’t always easy to do when the pressure to “settle” is all around us. I’ve been struggling with a rant that has been wanting to escape for about a month or so but I think I’m finally able to talk about my frustrations without succumbing to a rant. Because rants aren’t very glamorous, as our mentor Ruth Tolman alluded to in her Ten Commandments for Conversational Charm.
The pressure to conform is tremendous. But if we give in to that pressure to conform, then we will be just like everyone else: average. We don’t have to be snobs but it is okay to acknowledge that food from most chain restaurants are bland-tasting and overpriced for what you get. It is okay to refuse to shop at clothing chains like Old Navy where the clothes are cheap in the short run but more expensive in the long run because they are so poorly made that they have to be replaced more frequently. It is okay to look nice “just because” even it elicits disparaging remarks from friends about making them look bad.
I refuse to conform to mediocre standards.
